We are facing a referendum in Washington that could potentially remove over 250 domestic partnership benefits. Our opponents must gather over 120,000 signatures in less than 90 days to get the referendum on the ballot. Once the radical right wing coalition announced its desire to collect signatures, the LGBT community and their straight allies hit the ground running. In a matter of hours thousands took a pledge to decline to sign. http://eqfed.org/campaign/DeclineToSignPet_71 Hundreds volunteered and donations began to replenish depleted war chests from the staggering economy. In short the anti-equality movement has been the best thing for the LGBT community in Washington in a long time.
I think the same can be said about prop 8. The consequences of prop 8 were so overwhelmingly painful to millions of people around the world that it woke a sleeping giant. Since prop 8, a landslide of states have turned towards equality and the momentum seems unstoppable.
When NOM launched their gathering storm ads and recruited Miss California, marriage equality took a 10 – 15 point leap in the national polls. Hundreds spoofed the commercials offering an important take on the insanity the anti-equality groups offer.
In short, the anti-equality movement is dieing, and as they do the LGBT community is growing stronger by the day.
