A call for peace if we get a bad ruling

I went to San Francisco for the day yesterday, to witness the prop 8 hearings and to be part of the rally outside the courthouse. A couple thousand people showed up. Tensions were clearly high between the pro 8 folks and the anti-8 people. The New York Times, the LA Timees, and others have reported that the case does not look good for us. I am afraid I agree. I am concerned that if we have a negative ruling that leaves prop 8 intact, that the anger will boil over into violence. I encourage all of those who may become angry in the event of a negative outcome to turn your anger into action. Get off you asses, get away from Twitter and Facebook, and start doing the real work. Knock on doors, canvas the streets, organize teach-ins, and most importantly BE CREATIVE. This fight does not stand in California alone. We need to fight everywhere, from California, to Idaho, to Wisconsin and Arkansas. We need to leave our safety zones, the places where we have already won the hearts and minds of our neighbors, and we need to cross over into the neighborhoods that we know we are unwelcome. We need to engage them in peaceful dialogue. We need to drag our friends with us. We need to show them our humanity with a renewed courage and zeal. This fight will not be won for us, or by us alone. We need our straight allies now more than ever. Join us in this movement. For now we are all at risk. Majorities may be able to remove the rights of minorities by simple votes. What if your rights were on the ballot next? Scary, huh?
